Orienteering Day

WHAT IS AN ORIENTEERING DAY?

These are fun, practical activities where young people from Year 1 - 6 have the opportunity to learn and develop orienteering and map skills using the outdoor spaces on their school site.

Using adapted maps, legends and terminology, young people will navigate in sequence to complete a variety of courses. All resources are bespoke to the school, and equipment will be provided for use on the day, including control stations and SI-cards (dibbers).

WHO'S IT FOR?

All children from Years 1-6 can take part.

WHAT WILL THE OUTCOMES BE?

There are many cross curricular links with PE, geography and maths. Young people will develop their confidence, understanding and knowledge of this enjoyable and engaging physical activity, with many pathways for older students into school games events and local community provision.

WHAT WILL THE SCHOOL NEED TO DO?

  • Schools will need to contact us to book two dates; one for the event and one at least 10 days prior to the event, with the PE lead, to allow maps, courses, timetable of sessions to be discussed and appropriate resources produced, including a risk assessment.

  • Agree a timetable for the day for groups, with young people working in pairs.

  • Inform appropriate staff within the school of arrangements. Ensure all children have suitable clothing / footwear available on the day for outdoor activities.

  • School staff to accompany and assist during sessions and can take part too.
